This book explains all operations, features, and controls of the Canon PowerShot S100 camera in clear language, providing guidance not only about how to accomplish things with the camera, but when and why to use certain features. The book does not assume specialized knowledge by the reader, but adopts a matter-of-fact tone in covering topics such as autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, aperture priority, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, white balance, ISO, and macro photography. The book includes discussions of the special features of the camera, including its High-Definition video capability and its Super Slow Motion movie settings, which allow the user to slow down action to one-eighth of its normal speed.

The book has more than 200 photographs, almost all in full color, which illustrate the controls and menus of the S100 and include examples of the types of pictures that can be taken using the many creative settings of the camera, including Creative Filters mode settings, which let the photographer alter the color processing and other aspects of images. In addition, the book explains menu options such as Dynamic Range Correction, and it explains the strong array of features that the camera has for burst shooting.

The book also goes beyond the realm of everyday photography, with introductions to topics such as infrared photography, street photography, macro photography, and creating 3D (three-dimensional) images that can be viewed with conventional red and blue 3D glasses.

In three appendices, the book describes accessories for the PowerShot S100 camera, including filter adapter, cases, and external flash; gives a list of web sites and other resources for further information; and includes a section with “quick tips” that give insights into how to take advantage of the features of the camera in the most efficient ways possible.

The book includes a detailed Table of Contents and a full Index, so the reader can quickly find information about any particular feature or aspect of the camera.

This is a very well-written guide to the superb Canon S100. I am a busy guy, so I appreciate something that helps me get through the learning curve on a new camera, and this Guide did that nicely. This is a very thorough, easy-to-follow aftermarket manual for the S100 and it is quite a bit more readable than the PDF manual that is available for the S100 from Canon. This one is easy to read; I found myself more or less reading it like a novel, camera in hand, and when I found new settings or whatnot for the camera as I read, I would stop and play with the new setting until I understood it. When I worked through the Guide in this fashion, I found that I had learned quite a few new things about the S100. I had not bought a new pocket camera for over 7 years, so I had a lot to learn and this book pretty much got me up to speed on many new and unfamiliar features and capabilities of the S100. The best part, of course, is that this is a Kindle book, so I have it permanently loaded both on my iPad and my iPhone. Both or at least one or the other are usually along with me when I am shooting, so the Guide is always available as a quick reference if I need it.

This is a nifty little book that is well worth the purchase price. RJB.

Photographer Guide to the Canon PowerShot S100 edition by Alexander White Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

Great! This is a detailed explanation of all the functions of this camera. Whoa. Little did I really know about this camera, even after using it for 2 years. I am just a casual user and this camera guide shows so many new and useful this to do. You can not go wrong with this guide. Great!
I really wanted this guide to allow me to use the full functionality of my S110 but knowing that there were minor changes to the camera I decided to buy this guide. I read it cover to cover on my iPad and took that with me on a recent hiking trip - I was able to use my camera's features a lot better than I could have after reading just the manual.
The Guide is clear, concise. I wish it was for the S110, but other than that it is a good guide for an amateur. I recommend it.
Purchased my first Canon as well as this high-end point-and-shoot for everyday photos. If you are not familiar with dSRL cameras and how they work, the first time you turn on this camera will be slightly overwhelming. This guide is perfect for beginners in explaining the various camera functions, what they do, and how to make them work with your photography. The guide is littered with examples for each feature to provide a visual aid. I found this guide so helpful that I also purchased the Sony Cybershot RX100 guide when my S100 encountered the dreaded lens error on vacation and needed a new camera for the rest of the trip.
The book is OK as a supplement for, not a replacement of, the manual. The manual is shorter, yet has more comprehensive illustrations. The book is written conversationally rather than as a to-the-point reference volume. The book's index is much better than the manual's, but still incomplete, e.g., no entries for "LCD" (it's called the display), "light" or "low-light." The text omits some simple things, e.g., how to turn on the display without extending the lens. (Press playback.) The search function on the version is OK, but does not allow searching for multiple words that don't appear in the order searched, e.g., "display" and "playback". It also doesn't highlight what's found. The table of contents has no page numbers, but entries do link to the pages. The index begins with an alphabet list for quick-link to the index section for that letter, but it invariably ends up a letter or two off. The few pages of appendices are informative. The 's ability to highlight and add notes is very helpful. The book is worth the price, not the hardcopy price.
I recently bought a used S100 and I didn't want to print out the manual that is on the CD that came with the camera so bought this book which seemed to be the only other option. The information is useful but written in such a conversational style that it's a bit tedious finding the specific information I'm looking for. Also, a lot of the illustrations appear to be low res snapshots of the camera screen which are smaller than the actual screen and hard to read. If you are new to photography or to digital photography the book is great as it explains the camera functions in great detail. If you already have some experience then you might want to stick to the offical Canon manual which is available for free at the Canon website if you don't have the CD that came with the camera. I bought the book used and for the money I spent I'm satisfied with the purchase.
I bought his after many back and forth reads through the official Canon manual and thought that it does a very good job of explaining many of the options in plain English nd it cleared up a good number of questions I still had about how the camera operates. Mind you, it is still not a quick read. If you want to get the most out of your camera then you're going to have to study up on it. If you don't like to read, then get a simpler point and shoot camera and just learn how to use the on/off switch.

As for S110 specifics, a small number of the menu items have been re-arranged and/or renamed due to the advent of the new touchscreen on the S110. It should be fairly obvious to you where these differences are as you will try to replicate what the book is talking about and won't find the option(s) on your camera. The changes are mostly with different focusing modes and the methods of controlling them. You also won't find any mention *at all* of any touchscreen functionally but fortunately Canon has made the touchscreen use pretty intuitive and obvious (I can't think of any hidden features or instances where the touchscreen didn't do what I think it should).

The other big difference between S100 and S110 is WiFi in place of GPS. There is very little mention of GPS in this book. I'm still looking for a plain English explanation of the new WiFi features. Canon has made it very confusing.

Summary
Great plain English explanation of camera functions an usage, as well as some basic photography lessons (where needed). 98% of the content still applies to the S110.
