Who hasn’t had an event in life so bad, that you wanted move on, both literally and figuratively? When Gracyn has an opportunity to do so, she seizes it. Her mother is offered an overseas promotion, which she refused, unwilling to uproot Gracyn her senior year of high school, despite the many alternatives Gracyn suggests. To the main character’s surprise, her long-lost sister comes through, offering to take Gracyn in.Adjusting from living in a big city to a small town, making new friends, and fitting into the rhythm of life in her new home is expected, however this move isn’t typical and Gracyn is faced with surprising changes and challenges.
Gypsy Magic is a well-paced YA book with engaging characters. The teens are depicted accurately. I was raised in a small town and yes, we gathered around bonfires and drank beer. When there’s not much to do, young adults find ways to occupy their time—often in activities that adults wouldn’t approve of. Royston inserts fully-realized parental figures in a believable manner. In some books, the adults are cardboard figures, not touched much upon, or portrayed as idiots.
I loved that horses were prominent in the book and I totally get Gracyn’s fear of them. (Hey, they’re large, have hooves and chompy teeth.) I’m a big-time animal lover, so I’m always thrilled to see them in books, and yes, I love horses too.
When I finished this book, I was eager to find out what happened next and very pleased I didn’t want to smack the main character. (I’ve been disappointed in the portrayal of teens.”

Gypsy Magic The Gypsy Magic Trilogy Volume 1 Tonya Royston 9781530218721 Books Reviews
Gypsy Magic is an engaging, well-written story. I liked that the female lead, Gracyn, is a smart high school senior who works hard to get good grades. She’s having to adjust to a whole new life in a new state. Her boyfriend, who is in a rock band, is also smart. Gracyn’s world has become very complicated soon after she moves to her newly discovered sisters house. A suspected child killer comes back to town (her new neighbor), her new friend behavior has changed, and she’s finding she has enhanced senses. I won’t divulge details so that I don’t ruin the book for you.
Once I hit mid-point in the book the pages flew by. I feel this is more of an introduction of what’s to come for Gracyn in the series as she learns more of what she is and what she can do. There is a good plot twist. The characters are interesting and I look forward to how they develop further in the next two books in the trilogy.
I recommend this to those who enjoy young adult reads with paranormal aspects.
Gracyn Pierce is starting over; new home, new school, new town…and new problems. She thought everything would be perfect, and her first few days do seem to be just that, but memories of what she left behind in Bethesda continue to surface. In her quest to forget, she throws herself into her schoolwork, her sights set on an Ivy League college.
Her attempts to stay focused are derailed when the neighbor suspected of murdering his sister returns to town. Not only that, but he’ll be sitting right next to her in art class. As if that isn’t stressful enough, Gracyn begins to change in ways that shouldn’t be possible and there seems to be no explanation. It doesn’t take her long to learn that things in Sedgewick are not what they seem to be and even the sister who opened her home has secrets.
Should Gracyn continue to pursue her goal of getting accepted to MIT or will the secrets plaguing her past and stalking her present ruin her future?

3.5 Stars (I wish allowed half star ratings!)
This book was ok, but I found myself starting to skim after about the fourth chapter up until Lucian found Gracyn in the woods (Chapter 19) with only a few stops along the way. There were a number of reasons for this, not the least of which was Ms. Royston’s insistence on repeating the same pieces of information every other paragraph. I didn’t feel the need to be so continually reminded that 1) Gracyn had a bad experience with horses when she was a child and 2) Sam’s stepdad did something awful. My struggle to get and stay immersed in the story made the occasional editorial issue that much more distracting and I feel that Gypsy Magic would benefit from another round of editing. I came across a number of passages where the wrong word is used; kitchens have alcoves, not enclaves and pitchforks have tines, not spokes. Oddities like that tend to catch my attention more and more lately.
If you’ve read any of my other reviews, you know that strong, well-developed, complex characters make or break a story for me. In this case, I was a little disappointed. I felt fairly indifferent towards Gracyn for most of this book and I found her hard to relate to a lot of the time. She jumps to weird, irrational conclusions and is reluctant to talk about the simplest things. Her reactions also feel out of proportion to the event she is reacting to and that started to grate on me after awhile. (She did get better as the story progressed, though.)
That being said, this is the first book in a trilogy and very much devoted to the setup of place, time, and players. And in spite of my struggle to like Gracyn, I did like the other teens quite a bit. I think Celeste was my favorite; she reminded my quite a bit of a friend I had in college whom I love dearly. I was intrigued by Lucian from the jump and I’m curious to see where things go with him in the next two books. Also, even though ‘magic’ is part of the title, the way it manifested was pleasantly unexpected.
With the world-building out of the way, I have high hopes for the remaining two books, especially considering how Gypsy Magic ended! After devouring one novel after another since I was a very young child, I’ve become fairly adept at predicting plot outcomes. I typically know what’s about to happen, who did the deed, and who’s going to save the day. Not this time, and that was refreshing.
Bottom line While I feel this book struggled to get off the ground, it’s a promising start to an interesting YA series. I’d recommend this for anyone who loves to see the intricate development of relationships—both person-to-person and between people and animals—and also for anyone who loves a good plot twist. I will definitely be watching for Book 2.
